Choosing the right hair transplant method is a critical step in your hair restoration journey. Today, surgeons utilize three main techniques: Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), Direct Hair Implantation (DHI), and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). Each method has distinct clinical advantages depending on your level of baldness, donor density, and recovery timeline.
1. FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation / Strip Method)
FUT is the traditional gold standard of hair transplantation. The surgeon excises a thin strip of scalp skin from the permanent donor zone (back of the head). Under high-powered microscopes, technicians dissect the strip into individual follicular units (grafts) for placement.
- Advantages: Delivers excellent graft survival rates because follicles remain protected inside their natural tissue cushion during dissection. Allows extraction of large graft numbers in a single session. Typically more affordable.
- Disadvantages: Leaves a linear scar at the back of the head, which is visible if hair is cut very short. Recovery takes longer (10 to 14 days) due to sutures.
2. FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)
FUE replaced the need for strip harvesting by extracting follicular units individually. The surgeon uses a motorized micro-punch (typically 0.7mm to 0.9mm in diameter) to dissect and pull out individual follicles directly from the scalp.
- Advantages: No linear scar. Leaves tiny dot scars that are virtually invisible, even with short haircuts. Quick recovery time (3 to 5 days).
- Disadvantages: Total graft count per session can be lower than FUT. Follicles are more fragile during extraction as they lack the tissue buffer of strip dissection.
3. DHI (Direct Hair Implantation)
DHI is an advanced refinement of the FUE technique. Graft extraction is identical to FUE, but placement differs. Instead of pre-cutting incisions in the bald area and manually inserting grafts, the surgeon uses a specialized Choi Implanter Pen to simultaneously create the channel and insert the follicle.
- Advantages: Minimizes graft handling and out-of-body time, maximizing graft survival. Allows high-density placement. Offers precise control over growth angle, direction, and depth. Shaveless options are available.
- Disadvantages: More expensive due to imported single-use Choi pens. Requires surgical expertise, making it a slower procedure.
